The Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre (known simply as the Nelum Pokuna to most locals), is a major performing arts centre in Colombo. The word Nelum Pokuna means “Lotus Pond”, and the architecture of the building takes direct inspiration from the similarly-named 12th-century lotus pond in Sri Lankan’s ancient city of Polonnaruwa.

The building was conceived so that Sri Lanka’s long history of performance and theatre could thrive and performers could have a central location to showcase their talents. It was designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, and constructed in Sri Lanka under the guidance of professional local architects.

Design of the Nelum Pokuna

The Nelum Pokuna is a granite lotus flower in full bloom, 24 ft. nine in. diameter, with five concentric laminae of eight petals, gradually diminishing to a stamen five ft. four in. across. To create the unique design of the bath, the petal rings were depressed into concavity 4ft. 6 in. depth, reversing nature’s order. The result is a granite lotus bath in all its shapeliness, which has stood the test of time.

The Nelum Pokuna: A Hidden Gem

Despite its unique design and historical significance, most tourists miss the Nelum Pokuna. However, if you are lucky to visit it on a quiet evening or early morning, it is a spot of great romance which will beckon you every time you visit Polonnaruwa. The Nelum Pokuna is a hidden gem that adds to Polonnaruwa’s already rich history and architecture.

The Nelum Pokuna (Lotus Pond) – Mahinda Rajapakse Theatre is a fully equipped performance centre, meant for large scale theatrical productions. The theatre consists of two venues for performance, which includes the main auditorium and an open air amphitheater.

As this architectural masterpiece is situated in the heart of the Colombo city, it facilitates easy access for both local and foreign producers. The Theatre is also surrounded by several five Star Hotels. Also there are several commercial establishments, like ODEL, the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct etc; nearby. The ease of access and the other facilities in the area attract many foreign artistes and producers to host their productions at the Theatre. Hence, the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaska Theatre becomes a solid body for bringing in foreign investment to the economy and will play a vital role in promoting tourism in the Sri Lanka.
